Dear Teachers, Students and friends of ANZCA,

It's hard to believe we're now programming Series 3 examinations! Before we know it the year will be over and Christmas/New Year will be upon us. The year really is flying.

Online Enrolment Trial
This series saw a trial of the new online enrolment system, and overall it was well received. There are a number of adjustments to be made, but our intention is to make it available as an option to all teachers in Series 1, 2019. Thank you to those teachers who participated in the trial. The great thing about this system is that teachers can complete the enrolment for each student, then send off the invoice (by email) to the parents. From that point on, the website will send payment reminders to the parents as the deadline approaches.

Jazz Examinations
For any students sitting Jazz Syllabus examinations in this series, please remember that it is your responsibility to ensure the smooth flow of backing tracks for the examination. This means arriving at your examination with your own playback equipment, which is cued and ready to go when you enter the exam room. It is strongly recommended that you have all the tracks you need stored on your device, as poor internet reception may disrupt or prevent streaming. (Of course, these comments also apply to any examination where backing tracks are used.)

It is a requirement of the Jazz Syllabus system that all pieces are played with backing tracks*, which are available for free download from our website; choose Support from the menu, then Jazz Syllabus.

*Or piano accompaniment for all instruments except piano.

Ivor Morgan Retires
Ivor Morgan will be well known to teachers through his many years of examining around Australia and overseas. Ivor has been with ANZCA from the very start, being one of the founding Directors of our organisation. Personally, I can remember back in 1983 (the year ANZCA started) taking my entry to the ANZCA office, which was then at Ivor's home (in the back bungalow!). Ivor has been a wonderful asset to ANZCA, and on behalf of the Board of Directors and staff I wish him all the best for the future. Thank you, Ivor!

Student Checklist
The Series 3 checklists will be sent in the next few days. Please take the time to check the spelling of your students' names, their instrument and grade: this way you can avoid any administration fees or whiteout corrections on your reports.

Good Luck
A message to everyone enrolled for Series 3 examinations: don't leave all the hard work until the last few weeks before your examination. If you work hard now, you can spend the final weeks adding all the refinements to your pieces for a really impressive performance! Good luck.

Tony Betros, General Manager

We are proud to announce the release of Twenty-five Studies for Classic Electric Guitar by composer, author and examiner Michelle Nelson.

An inspiring set of composed studies that are both challenging and entertaining, these idiomatic works explore the techniques that create classic electric guitar style. Twenty-five Studies for Classic Electric Guitar is available now from our online shop. Order now to receive one of a limited number of copies signed by Michelle!

Coming soon: Michelle is about to launch a new website, featuring a blog page dedicated to this book. Check out over the coming weeks for more information on each study.

Drum Kit Fills Videos Now on YouTube

Video performances of solos from Mark Murphy's new Drum Kit Fills books are being progressively uploaded to his YouTube channel, drums9842. Solos 1 to 6 from Volume 1 and Solos 1 and 2 from Volume 2 are currently online, with new videos added regularly. Series 2 Practical Exams
This year we are pleased to welcome Karen Henderson from Queensland and Sandra Conwell from New South Wales as our examiners for New Zealand. I'll send all teachers concerned a pen portrait and photo of these two talented ladies. Please make them welcome, as I'm sure you will. In many centres, there may be enough time at afternoon tea for teachers to meet their examiner, to ask questions and pick up helpful pointers, and to get to know them a little.

A special thank you to those teachers who are hosting a centre for ANZCA exams – and thank you in anticipation for the morning and afternoon teas (and sometimes lunches) that you so kindly provide. Your generosity doesn't go unnoticed, and is most appreciated.

Series 3 Theory Exam Entries
Good luck to all those who are sitting their theory exams on the 27th of October. Practice papers for all grades are available from me, as well as Worked Papers books for 2017 and 2016, so don't hesitate to contact me.

Latest Books
I have the new Drum Kit Fills Volumes 1, 2 and 3 in stock (see the June edition of Stretto for details), and Jazz Syllabus Level 2 and Twenty-five Studies for Classic Electric Guitar (see News Diary, above) can also be ordered through me now.

As the end of the year fast approaches, best wishes for your own student concerts, which some of us hold before the actual exam date. It is a special time, when our students gain confidence as they play to an audience.

Audrey Chin, Malaysia & Singapore

The coming weeks will set the pace in getting ready for the next series of theory and practical examinations, which will be held from mid-October to mid-November 2018.

There are some interesting music festivals and competitions in this region, including the 25th Kota Kinabalu Music and Dance Festival, which will be held on the 15th and 16th of September. ANZCA is proud to be one of the sponsors of this year's festival, and our examiner May Gavin is part of the adjudication panel. Details can be obtained from .

Jazz enthusiasts should also check out the Singapore International Jazz Battle and The Forum 2018 on the 21st–23rd of September. Go to for more information.

Wishing all a happy and busy August and September 2018.
